Hibiki 17 Year Old is a masterfully crafted Japanese blended whisky, aged in a selection of American oak, sherry, and rare Mizunara oak casks. Bottled at 43% ABV, this expression embodies the harmony and refinement that define the Hibiki range. First released in 1989 to celebrate Suntory’s 90th anniversary, Hibiki 17 blends malt whiskies from Yamazaki and Hakushu with grain whisky from Chita, creating exceptional balance, complexity, and elegance. Now discontinued and increasingly scarce, it has become one of the most sought-after Japanese whiskies in the world. With its signature combination of dried fruit, Mizunara spice, gentle smoke, and a long, polished finish, Hibiki 17 represents the pinnacle of Japanese blending craftsmanship and remains a prized bottle for collectors, investors, and connoisseurs alike.

Hibiki 17 Year Old Tasting Notes

Nose: A harmonious blend of sweet fruits, floral notes and a hint of oak, with a delicate undercurrent of honey and caramel, alongside peach, apricot and sandalwood.

Palate: Silky-smooth and beautifully balanced, with rich vanilla-forward sweetness and soft caramel notes from American oak maturation, layered with dried fruit.

Finish: Long, spicy and elegant, with a distinctive incense-like character from the small proportion of rare Mizunara oak in the blend.

Why Choose Hibiki 17 Year Old?

Few whiskies carry the cultural weight of Hibiki 17 — beyond its considerable technical pedigree (a blend of more than 30 individually selected malt and grain whiskies, each aged at least 17 years), it achieved genuine mainstream fame through its starring role in the 2003 film Lost in Translation, where Bill Murray's character delivered the now-iconic line "For relaxing times, make it Suntory time." That combination of critical acclaim (multiple World Whiskies Awards wins for Best Japanese Blended Whisky) and pop-culture immortality made it one of the most recognisable Japanese whiskies in the world, long before the current Japanese whisky boom. Suntory discontinued it in September 2018, not due to declining quality or popularity, but because surging global demand for aged Japanese whisky had outstripped the finite supply of 17-year-old stock committed to barrel nearly two decades earlier — a supply constraint that, by nature, cannot be quickly reversed. Suntory has given no indication it will ever return to production, meaning every bottle remaining on the market represents part of a genuinely finite, diminishing supply. For collectors, it's widely regarded as a blue-chip bottle with a strong track record of price appreciation; for drinkers, it remains one of the most refined, spicier and more vibrant expressions in the Hibiki lineage, distinct from the deeper, more heavily Mizunara-influenced Hibiki 21.

Hibiki

Hibiki is the flagship blended whisky of the House of Suntory, launched in 1989 to mark the company's 90th anniversary. Meaning "harmony" in Japanese, Hibiki draws malt and grain whiskies from Suntory's Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries, blended to achieve a signature smoothness and balance. The 17 Year Old was one of the original age-statement expressions introduced alongside the 21 and 30 Year Old, and for decades sat on shelves at what now seem remarkably modest prices before Suntory discontinued it in 2018 amid a broader industry-wide shortage of aged Japanese whisky stock. Hibiki remains one of the most recognised and celebrated names in Japanese whisky worldwide.
