The Laphroaig Càirdeas 2026 — French Oak is a limited-edition Islay single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at 52.6% ABV in a 700ml bottle. The 18th annual release in the Càirdeas ("friendship" in Gaelic) series made exclusively for Friends of Laphroaig, it's the first Càirdeas ever fully matured in 100% French oak — timber traditionally used for wine and cognac rather than whisky. Released to mark the 40th anniversary of Fèis Ìle, Islay's whisky festival, it layers Laphroaig's signature peat smoke, maritime salinity and medicinal edge with the softer, more elegant depth French oak brings, non-chill filtered with natural colour.

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2026 French Oak Tasting Notes.

Nose: Softly phenolic peat, ashy smoke and a salty sea breeze, layered with café mocha, worn leather, aromatic cedarwood, toasted almonds, vanilla and honey.

Palate: Creamy, spicy and slightly drying, with maritime salt, cappuccino and caramel syrup, vanilla, dried fruit, dark chocolate-enrobed cherries, cinnamon and a bite of black pepper.

Finish: Long, saline and savoury, with smoked ham and lingering peat smoke — a classic Laphroaig marker regardless of cask type.

Why Choose Laphroaig Cairdeas 2026 French Oak?

Since 2008, the Càirdeas series has explored ex-sherry, quarter casks, port wood, Madeira, PX, Amontillado and triple-wood combinations — but in 18 years, Laphroaig had never released a Càirdeas fully matured in French oak until now. That's a genuinely significant first: French oak is more porous and tannic than the American oak Laphroaig typically uses, and traditionally belongs to wine and cognac production rather than heavily peated Scotch — a real experiment in whether that fruit-forward, leathery complexity could hold its own against Laphroaig's iodine-forward, medicinal intensity. Dr. Calum Fraser, master blender for Scotch and Irish at Suntory Global Spirits, called the result "a smooth, balanced whisky with notable depth and complexity," highlighting honeydew melon, tart cherries and pomegranate as standout characteristics the French oak brought forward. Timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Fèis Ìle — Islay's biggest whisky festival — this release carries genuine milestone significance, and as with every Càirdeas, it's exclusive to Friends of Laphroaig, a free-to-join community that gets first access to each year's limited bottling. Bottled at a robust 52.6%, non-chill filtered with natural colour, it's a serious, collectible pick for Laphroaig fans wanting to see the distillery's iconic peated character through a genuinely new lens.
