Laphroaig Càirdeas: seventeen years of one whisky's most interesting annual series
Most annual whisky releases are variations on a theme. The same base spirit, a different finish each year, a numbered edition on the label to mark the sequence. The series exists more as a commercial framework than a creative one.
The Laphroaig Càirdeas is something different. Since 2008, the distillery has produced one new expression every year at Fèis Ìle, Islay's annual whisky festival, and in seventeen editions, it has not repeated a cask type, a production approach, or a flavour direction. Port wood. Madeira. Fino. Triple wood. PX. Warehouse-specific selections. Cask strength quarter casks. Each one a genuinely distinct proposition, each one made in limited quantities, and each one gone when the stock runs out.
That consistency of ambition, maintained across nearly two decades, is what makes the series worth understanding properly, both as a collection of individual whiskies and as a record of what one of Islay's most distinctive distilleries has been willing to do with the trust of its most loyal customers.
What Càirdeas is
Càirdeas is Scottish Gaelic for friendship. The name was suggested, as Laphroaig tells it, by a former Distillery Manager's grandmother, which gives it a warmth that the series has always reflected. The concept grew directly from the Friends of Laphroaig programme, which the distillery launched in 1994 as a way of formalising the relationship with the community of drinkers who had built their reputation.
Friends of Laphroaig receive a notional plot of land on Islay, a dram on arrival at the distillery, and, most meaningfully for collectors, first and exclusive access to the annual Càirdeas release. The bottles are made for them, revealed to them first at Fèis Ìle each spring, and not widely distributed beyond that initial allocation. What reaches the broader market does so in small quantities, and does not return once it is gone.
The first Càirdeas was produced in 2008 and bottled from ex-sherry casks at 55% ABV. It established a template not of style but of intent: each year, something genuinely new. Something that the series had not done before.
The series, edition by edition
The range of creative decisions across seventeen years is striking when you look at them together.
What that list illustrates is a distillery that has used the series to explore every dimension of its own character, lighter and darker wood types, longer and shorter finishes, different strength points, different ages, even specific warehouses. The Càirdeas is not a showcase for what Laphroaig always tastes like. It is a showcase for what Laphroaig can become when a particular production decision is applied to its foundation.
And through all of it, the foundation remains. Every edition is unmistakably Laphroaig. The peat, the coastal character, the medicinal quality that divides opinion so reliably, none of it disappears regardless of what the cask does. That consistency within diversity is what makes the series genuinely interesting to follow.

Each bottle in that run represents a specific creative decision by the person who was making Laphroaig's whisky that year, informed by the casks available, the occasion being marked, and the audience it was being made for. Tasted in sequence, the collection becomes a document of how a distillery thinks over time, not just a set of bottles, but a record of seventeen years of considered production decisions.
On the series as an investment
The secondary market for Càirdeas releases has been consistent rather than spectacular. Individual editions trade at premiums above retail, with earlier editions commanding significantly more than later ones given the smaller production runs and the time elapsed since release. The 2008 and 2009 editions in particular are rarely encountered outside of private collections.
The value of the series as a collection lies less in any single bottle's appreciation and more in the difficulty of assembling a complete run. Each annual release was available in limited quantities at the time of its release and has not been restocked since. The gaps in most collectors' runs are not from lack of interest but from having not been in the right place at the right time. A complete or near-complete set of any edition run is considerably harder to find than the sum of its parts.
